Chapter Twelve

Cass clapped her hands together and cheered. She’d been in front of the computer for almost five straight hours, but she’d finished the short story. She spun the office chair around. The sound of canine nails on hardwood preceded the dogs as they bounded into her office.

“I think we deserve time in the sunshine! What do you think?” Just as she spoke, the phone rang. She saved the document and picked up the receiver. “Hello?”

“Cass.”

She gritted her teeth and a shiver ran the length of her spine. This wasn’t the man she wanted to talk to. “What do you want, Dex?”

“Now, Cass. I hear you have a boy toy,” he said, his voice smooth.

“Yes, I have a new man in my life. Is that a problem?” She was courting the devil’s wrath by irritating him, but she couldn’t hide from him forever.

“Don’t try to walk away from me. I’ll let him know about your—our past. He won’t like knowing you’re damaged and used up. But me, I still love you and can cherish you the way you deserve.”

Cass blinked and blindly slapped at the papers on her desk. Her heart lodged in her throat. “Dex—”

Instead of letting her answer, he hung up. She slumped in her seat. She closed her eyes and tried to process his vague threat. Great. One more skeleton thrown in her face by the devil. What was next? A tax audit? Did she have a root canal scheduled that she’d forgotten about?

She patted the dogs and turned back to the blank computer screen. “Let’s make a treat and visit the set. Want to see Logan?”

Both dogs wriggled around her ankles. She’d take that as a yes. Cass saved the document once more, but this time onto a reusable disc and headed downstairs with her laptop under her arm and the two dogs hot at her heels.

For the next two hours, she mixed cookie dough, baked and worked from her laptop on the novel. She kept herself busy, but sometimes Dex’s threats and the break-in came to mind. Some of the stress went away as she snuck a few bites of raw cookie dough. Words flowed more freely from her fingers, giving more meat to the skeletal novel. Right now her priority was to finish so she could spend unhindered time with Logan.

When the buzzer sounded, she switched off the timer and the oven, then removed the pan of cookies from the heat. “Last batch is done,” she called to the dogs. “Should I take some to the workers?”

Elliott barked and knocked over a plant with his tail.

Puppies… She shook her head. “Okay, I’ll take some to the crew and give a couple to Logan. But first, I need to clean up the mess you made.” She cleaned up after the dog and made a mental note to move the plants from the floor.

Once she’d put the broom and dustpan away, Cass packed the cookies in four airtight containers. She patted her pocket, making sure the key was still there.
